Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality in Indianapolis

The beginning of summer is an exciting time of year. it is also peak allergy season. Most homes today are sealed off well from the outdoors, but indoor air quality can still be compromised. When a home is sealed well, it will keep allergens and pollens indoors. Airborne allergens inside of the home are an important area of focus. Here are some tips to improve air quality.

Open Air

Open windows for 5-10 minutes each day. Opening the windows helps eliminate carbon monoxide contamination in the air and helps lessen the smell from toxic chemicals that are used to clean the home.

Up In Smoke

Ask smokers to step outside to enjoy a cigarette. Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 harmful chemicals. Smoking inside the home decreases your indoor air quality in Indianapolis and can be toxic to the lungs. The best option is to stop smoking, but if you or your guests are not ready for this step they should simply step outside to smoke.

Keep a Clean Home

Furniture and surfaces must be cleaned in the home to eliminate pollutants and other pests inside of the home. Furniture can begin to have a distorted shape if not cleaned and kept properly. It is suggested that a doormat is used to help eliminate dirt inside of the home. Floors should be vacuumed and mopped at least once a week.

Monitor humidity levels inside of the home. This will help minimize the growth of mold and the presence of dust mites that pollute the air we breathe. Some molds produce allergens that can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Using a dehumidifier to control moisture and allergens is suggested. Always monitor your home for any standing water and/or leaks.

Monitor Carbon Monoxide

Poorly functioning appliances in the home can increase carbon monoxide emissions. At high levels, carbon monoxide can cause fatalities. Install at least one carbon monoxide monitor in your home. Carbon monoxide detectors have a loud alarm and will sound when carbon monoxide gas reaches unacceptable levels.

Air-filtering plant

NASA’s Clean Air Study concluded that certain indoor plants naturally remove toxic agents in the air and purify the air indoors. Although some may not prefer house plants, they do improve indoor air quality in Indianapolis. Certain houseplants filter out toxic agents in the air such as benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde from the air inside of the home.

Air filter

It is important to change the air filter in your HVAC system each month. Dust and other air contaminants collect in the filter and will cycle back into the air of the home if not replaced. Changing the air filter of your HVAC system monthly also improves unit efficiency and helps save on utility costs.

Air Cleaner

One of the best ways to combat allergens in the home is to invest in an air cleaner. Check with your HVAC specialist to improve your indoor air quality in Indianapolis. Many different options are available, including ones that remove pollen and other types of allergens.
